Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Its walls come out of a river. Each winter, ice harvested from the Torne is shaped into a new hotel, and each art suite is handed to a different invited artist. Layout, sculpture and lighting differ from year to year.

Beds are blocks of ice topped with reindeer hide and an expedition-grade sleeping bag, a few degrees under freezing. Icehotel 365, a permanent wing open since 2016, keeps ice rooms cold through summer using solar energy. For anyone who prefers heating, conventional rooms and wooden cabins share the site. Jukkasjärvi, near Kiruna, lies about 200 km inside the Arctic Circle, and its calendar splits between aurora months and midnight-sun months.
